The Coleman Headwall is one of the most impressive features in the North Cascades. Like an icy Sentinel, it stands guard over the north side of Mount Baker. From the edge of the glacier, The Coleman Headwall rises over 2000 feet directly to the summit. Depending on the season, route conditions can range from steep snow to endless pitches of ice. Crevasses and bergschrunds add to the challenge.

Baker Mountain Guides proudly offers an exceptional experience on the Coleman Headwall. Our intimate local knowledge of the route and current conditions allows us to confidently craft custom adventures for our clientele.

Baker Mountain Guides offers custom ascents of the Coleman Headwall. We recommend a three-day itinerary.

  • Day 1: Approach

We’ll rendezvous at our office in Bellingham for orientation and gear check. Transportation will be provided to the Heliotrope Ridge Trailhead. We’ll follow the trail through temperate rainforest and ascend the Hogsback Ridge to our camp at 6000 feet.

  • Day 2: Summit Day

We’ll begin before dawn and cross the Coleman Glacier to the base of the route. Continuously steep snow and ice climbing will challenge us all the way to the summit. Our descent follows the Coleman Deming back to camp.

  • Day 3: Descent

On our final day, we’ll wake at a reasonable hour and eat a hearty breakfast. Afterwards, we’ll pack up camp, and descend to the Heliotrope Ridge Trailhead.
