The Emmons Glacier is not only the biggest glacier on Mount Rainier, but in all the contiguous Unites States as well. It’s size and elevation makes for a grandiose alpine experience, complete with giant seracs, massive icefalls, gaping crevasses, and endless alpine scenery. With over 10,000 feet of elevation gain, the Emmons Glacier is a challenging and rewarding climb.

Baker Mountain Guides has extensive experience guiding clients to the summit of Mount Rainier. Our exclusive Emmons Glacier program is designed to be of the highest quality. Our clientele can expect excellent customer service, fellowship, and amenity from our personable guides.

ITINERARY

Baker Mountain Guides offers a scheduled four-day ascent of the Emmons Glacier every other year.

  • Pre-Trip: Crystal Mountain

We’ll rendezvous at the Alpine Inn at Crystal Mountain Ski Area the day before our ascent. Your guide will conduct a meet-and-greet and gear check, and supply guests with group equipment. We encourage our guests to join us for dinner and drinks

  • Day 1: Approach

Breakfast will be at 8:30 AM at the Alpine Inn Restaurant. Afterwards, we’ll travel to White River Ranger Station and purchase climbing passes. A couple hours of easy trail will bring us to Glacier Basin, and our campsite for the evening.

  • Day 2: Ascend to High Camp

After breakfast, we’ll ascend the Interglacier to the base of Steamboat Rock. A short descending traverse will take us to the Emmons Glacier proper. We’ll continue up the Emmons Glacier and around Steamboat Rock to Camp Schurman at 9500 ft.

  • Day 3: Summit Day

Our day will begin long before dawn. We’ll ascend the corridor and Emmons Glacier headwall to the crater rim. From the rim, we’re only a few steps from Columbia Crest, the true summit of Rainier! We’ll descend the route back to camp.

  • Day 3: Descent

Our last day is all downhill. From Camp Schurman we’ll cross the Emmons Glacier to the Interglacier and descend to the White River Trailhead. From there we will return to the Alpine Inn to celebrate.
