Overview

The Backcountry Pro 3 Course is the last installment in Baker Mountain Guides BC Pro series. Students will travel to Valdez, Alaska, to push their limits in the birthplace of big mountain skiing and snowboarding. Instruction in the unique demands of skiing and riding massive, glaciated terrain will prepare students for a multi-day basecamp expedition into the heart of the Chugach Mountains. Out there somewhere, you’ll discover your final exam.

Baker Mountain Guides series of Backcountry Pro Courses fuse avalanche education with big mountain experience to create a complete apprenticeship in backcountry skiing and riding. Our respected instructors and awe-inspiring venues offer an unparalleled backcountry education.

Itinerary

Baker Mountain Guides offers scheduled 10-Day Backcountry Pro 3 Courses organized into 3 comprehensive sections.

  • Section 1: Big Mountain Orientation – 4 Days

Instructors and students will rendezvous the afternoon before the course for orientation. Section 1 will involve day tours around Thompson Pass. Instructors will introduce students to the challenges and techniques associated with skiing and riding big Alaskan terrain.

  • Section 2: Expedition Planning – 1 Day

Based on instructor recommendations, students will research zones, select a venue, and plan various tours. The group will organize and pack food and equipment. Helicopter transport will be arranged if necessary. Ideally, planning occurs on a weather day.

  • Section 3: Backcountry Basecamp – 5 Days

We’ll use a helicopter or skins to approach our zone deep in the Chugach. Basecamp will be on a massive valley glacier, surrounded by stunning peaks and ridgelines. Students will lead daily descents in glaciated terrain with mentorship and advice from instructors.
