Baker Mountain Guides offers scheduled four-day AIARE Level 2 Avalanche Courses. Custom courses available upon request.

  • Day 1: Fundamentals

The course will begin with instructor and student introductions. We’ll review level 1 concepts and engage in a case study. Afternoon topics will include mountain weather, formation and classification of new snow, and snowpack metamorphism.

  • Day 2: Companion Rescue Upgrade

We’ll begin the day in the field with a companion rescue upgrade. Students will review search organization and phases, and instructors will introduce multiple burial techniques. We’ll return to the classroom and discuss advanced observational techniques as well as avalanche formation and release.

  • Day 3: Field Observations

Students will assess the avalanche hazard, and we’ll head into the field. Instructors will incorporate snow pits and advanced observational techniques into the context of a backcountry tour. We’ll return to class to process our data and assess the current hazard.

  • Day 4: Backcountry Tour

Students will utilize their new knowledge base to assess the current avalanche hazard and plan a tour. Throughout the tour, we’ll focus on gathering quality field observations and tracking spatial variability of the avalanche problems. We’ll return to class to debrief the course.
